据《美联社》引述五角大楼防卫局（Pentagon Force Protection Agency）发布的新闻稿指，事发于当地时间周五（24日）早上约7时30分前。一部隶属Omni Ride公司的巴士，与另一部属于Fairfax Connector公司的巴士，在五角大楼附近迎头猛烈碰撞。
意外发生后，大批紧急救援人员赶赴现场。在23名伤者中，有18人需由救护车送往地区医院作进一步检查及治疗，其余5人则在现场接受敷治。当局确认，伤者中有10人为美国国防部的人员。截至目前，引发此次相撞事故的具体原因仍在调查当中。
